CSRD Electoral Area C

Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Area C is located along the Trans-Canada Highway and main CP Rail line, north of Salmon Arm and east of Kamloops. It includes the communities of Blind Bay, Eagle Bay, Cedar Heights, Notch Hill, Sorrento, Sunnybrae, Tappen, and White Lake – each of which has its own unique history and character. Area C makes up only 2% of land within the CSRD, but has 15% of the population.

Shuswap Lake lies at the heart of the area, providing beautiful views, recreational opportunities, a valuable fisheries resource, and a source of domestic water. There are also upland communities, forested mountains, and many farms and ranches that offer excellent opportunities for agriculture as well as hiking, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking.

The main industries in Area C are agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The mountainous area that divides the Salmon Arm and West Arm of Shuswap Lake occupies over 300 square kilometres of rural resource lands.  Most of this is Provincial Crown land, dominated by forestry. Area C is a productive agricultural area, boasting wineries, an organic micro-brewery, hop and produce farms, as well as chicken and cattle operations.

Area C has long been a popular summer vacation destination, supporting small motels, bed and breakfasts, rental cabins, and many parks and attractions. It is also home to a vibrant arts community  known for its many cultural events, such as the crafters’ market in Sorrento, Nimblefingers Festival, Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts, Squilax Pow-Wow, and much more.

Area C strives to be a sustainable community, maintaining its main industries while respecting the health and finite capacity of the natural environment. It aspires to a more diverse economy and to fulfilling its potential as a year-round tourist destination. The local population, including a large population of retirees, are supportive of the agricultural and resource-based industrial activity.

The South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce also supports business activity in Area C.
