CSRD Electoral Area D
Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Area D borders the city of Salmon Arm and includes the communities of Deep Creek, Falkland, Gardom Lake, Ranchero, Salmon Valley, and Silver Creek. It is accessible via Highway 97, between Kamloops and Vernon, and Highway 97b through Ranchero and Deep Creek, a main thoroughfare from Salmon Arm and Highway 1 to the Okanagan.
Area D is the agricultural heartland of the Shuswap, home to a stable year-round population and a strong rural spirit. Unlike other parts of the Shuswap, Area D is set apart by its particularly beautiful countryside ambience – rolling farmland, rivers, and mountains. The area has a long history of exceptional agriculture, thanks to excellent soil and growing conditions. The climate is moderate year-round.
Dairy is a main agricultural product while local ranches raise a mixture of cattle, chickens, sheep, horses amongst the dairy and produce farms. There is a winery, Ovino Winery, and a growing number of organic operations in the area. The local agricultural industry is supported by buyers and suppliers in the immediate surrounding communities and beyond. Forestry and logging were once dominant industries in the area, but are much less prominent now.
Area D as a whole is evolving as a place for young families to relocate to larger parcels of land and establish homes. Falkland is Area D’s most distinct community, home to the well-known Falkland Stampede and a town centre with cafés, restaurants, a grocery store, and other businesses, all surrounded by a range of agricultural operations and ranches on its borders. Access to other shopping and business services is available primarily in the neighbouring communities of Vernon, Kamloops, and Salmon Arm. Silver Creek and the Salmon Valley offer usable countryside known for its fertile land for farming, and support a variety of ever-growing and diversifying agrigulture-based operations.
Area D offers a beautiful landscape and good potential for development, but few established attractions. Many area residents wish to maintain a rural and agricultural spirit, and existing amenities and services, while growing the commercial base over time.
