Keeping the Shuswap Connected

Progress doesn’t always follow a straight line, but in the Shuswap, our perseverance to connect rural communities keeps us moving forward. The Shuswap Economic Development Society’s (SEDS) application to the Connecting Communities BC (CCBC) program was not selected for funding. However, our vision for reliable, high-speed broadband in the Shuswap remains strong. The news has given us an opportunity to take a more focused approach. We are developing a revised plan that will still bring meaningful improvements to underserved homes and businesses across our region.

Moving Forward with a Smaller but Mighty Project

Thanks to funding from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), the Shuswap Economic Development Society (SEDS) will continue advancing broadband connectivity in the region. The CIRA grant supports the planning and validation phase of a smaller broadband project that will bring high-speed internet access to many of the homes and communities that need it most.

In June 2025, the Shuswap Region Broadband Co-operative was officially formed. Since then, members have been working hard to refine the original broadband plan and find practical solutions that still deliver strong local benefits. This cooperative approach keeps broadband development community-driven and focused on long-term sustainability.

The co-op model reflects the best of what the Shuswap stands for—collaboration, shared ownership, and collective success. By working together, we’re building an infrastructure that will improve digital access, support local businesses, strengthen education and healthcare, and enhance communication across our region.

Promoting Growth and New Investment

While broadband expansion remains a key focus, SEDS is also making strong progress through its Investment and Attraction Strategy. This initiative promotes the Shuswap as a destination for new residents, investors, and entrepreneurs while supporting the growth of existing local businesses.

As part of this strategy, SEDS is pleased to welcome Chris Fields of Rynic for a presentation on Tuesday, October 29th at 7:15 p.m. at the Cedar Heights Community Hall in Blind Bay. This event will share updates on SEDS’ investment and attraction work, including the development of a new website, promotional video, investment guide, relocation guide, and sector profiles.

Community members and business owners are encouraged to attend and learn how these tools will help position the Shuswap for future growth and investment.

Join Us in Shaping the Future

SEDS is seeking passionate individuals who want to make a difference in the region’s economic future. We are currently looking for new board members who share our commitment to building a vibrant, sustainable Shuswap. Serving on the board is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that support innovation, local business, and community connection.

If you’re interested in joining the board or getting involved in any of our initiatives, please email info@shuswapecdev.ca for more information.

Looking Ahead

Our journey toward better broadband and stronger local economies is one of steady progress and shared determination. While the size of the project has changed, our goals remain the same ensuring that every community in the Shuswap can thrive in a connected, forward-looking economy.

Through partnerships, persistence, and community collaboration, SEDS continues to lead projects that bring opportunity, innovation, and resilience to the Shuswap. Together, we’re building connections that will last for generations to come.
